The Railway department today warned the public of a gang operating onboard long distance trains who befriend commuters and steal their belongings after they are drugged. These gangs were mostly known to target families on pilgrimage.
The gang who target families and people with children on pilgrimage would go on to befriend them by offering a seat and later offer some food in order to evade suspicion. Thereafter when the victims had become unconscious they would take away their jewelry, parcels and other valuable belongings, Commercial Superintendent of the Railway Department, Vijaya Samarasinghe told Daily Mirror online
He added that the people on pilgrimage to Kathargama and holy sites around the country were warned of these gangs and should be attentive when traveling by train especially during the Esala season.
Thousands of commuter travel outstation by train during the season and although security used to be tight during the war it has now been relaxed giving gangs the chance to carry out their operations.
