Bandara may quit UNP
Political News

UNP Puttalam District MP Palitha Range Bandara has threatened to leave the UNP or retire from politics if his party colleagues continue to neglect taking action against UNP member Shantha Abeysekara over his alleged involvement in assaulting Bandara.

Bandara told Daily Mirror online that it had been over a month since his assault and the party had failed to take any action against the attackers and if a satisfactory result was not announced soon he would consider leaving the UNP.

When questioned if he would join the government, Bandara said it was too early to comment as he would decide to work with a party which would benefit the public.

However Bandara also said that if he did not find a satisfactory party, he would retire from politics.

“The people in my electorate have voted for me and I want to work for them. There is no point in me continuing in a party who cannot take action against a member who tried to kill me. Therefore if no satisfactory action is taken against the attackers, I will leave the UNP and join another party even if it is the government or retire from politics completely,” Bandara said.

Bandara had last month announced that since he was fed up with his party he had decided to boycott all UNP events and meetings. However he had said that he had not decided to quit the party.

Meanwhile Bandara also lashed out at UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka saying he would expose him for deliberately delaying taking action against his attackers.

“He cannot say it is the responsibility of the Working Committee to take action when he is the party General Secretary. It is he who should conduct the inquiries and produce a report to the Working Committee over my assault. I know why he is neglecting taking action. Someday when I meet him personally I will expose him,” Bandara said.

Bandara also said that he had not received Attanayaka’s latest letter which he alleged that the General Secretary had leaked to the media in order to get publicity before sending it to him.

In his latest letter addressed to Bandara, Attanayaka dismissed the allegation made by Bandara to the effect that he was deliberately delaying disciplinary action against Shantha Abeysekara who had allegedly assaulted him in April.
