Pre-election related incidents have risen to 86 as
more and more ‘home and home’ infighting was reported from several
parts of the country, a polls monitor said today.
Keerthi Tenakoon with the Campaign for Free and
Fair Elections (CaFFE) said the incidents including 19 cases of damage
to private property, 30 assaults, 31 election violations and 13 cases in
the misuse of state property and related resources.
He added that nearly 90 per cent of the cases reported involved persons
from the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in the struggle for
preferential (manape) votes.
Some of the worst affected areas are Nawalapitiya, Kurunegala, Kalutara,
Matara, Galle, and Ratnapura, he added.
