President acts on Lessons Learnt Commission report
Hot News

Immediate administrative measures to ease the lives of resettled Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and all people living in the former conflict ridden areas have been suggested by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) in an Interim Communication to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the President's office said today.

These measures that require only changes in administrative practices were brought to the attention of the President by members of the LLRC who met him at Temple Trees earlier this evening, a statement said.

Among the immediate measures suggested are ensuring facilities to members of the public to use their own language in official transactions with government departments, especially the ability to make statements to the police in one’s own language among many other recommendations, the statement added. The need for administrative changes to enable these measures are based on the issues identified by the LLRC from evidence so far led before it by citizens in the former conflict ridden areas, when the Commission held sittings in some of those areas; and also on the evidence placed before it by other individuals and organizations, keen to see an early return to normalcy in these areas, with effective action towards reconciliation, the statement said.
