UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told the Sunday Observer that the party needs a number of changes in the future.
He said no one could say Thursday’s election was a severe defeat for the UNP, considering the massive 2,336,691 votes it secured.
Attanayaka who focused attention on the low voter turnout at the election said that this severely affected the defeat of some senior UNP members.
He said the Government too suffered a setback with a reduced number of votes in many electorates.
Referring to previous elections, Attanayaka said that the party which generally won the first election in the past, normally secured more votes at the second election too, but this was not so at this election.
